“Ele Será Chamado Nazareno” — Mateus Errou ao Citar Essa Profecia?

Mateus afirma que Jesus mudou-se para Nazaré, para "que se cumprisse o que fora dito por intermédio dos profetas: Ele será chamado Nazareno" (Mateus 2:23). Entretanto, tal profecia não é encontrada em nenhum profeta do AT. Será que Mateus cometeu um erro?

Mateus não disse que algum "profeta" (no singular) do AT tenha afirmado isso. Ele simplesmente afirmou que “profetas” (no plural) que viveram no AT predisseram que Jesus seria chamado Nazareno. Dessa forma, não há por que acharmos que devemos encontrar um versículo nesse sentido; devemos simplesmente considerar como sendo a afirmação de Mateus uma verdade geral, que pode ser encontrada em muitos profetas, no que corresponde ao tipo característico do nazareno. Há várias sugestões de como Jesus teria "cumprido" (realizado) essa verdade.

Alguns apontam para o fato de que Jesus cumpriu todos os requisitos de justiça da Lei do AT (Mt 5:17-18; Rm 8:3-4), da qual uma parte envolvia o santo compromisso feito no voto de “Nazireu”. Esse voto era para "consagrar-se para o Senhor" (Nm 6:2), e Jesus cumpriu isso perfeitamente. Entretanto, a palavra é diferente tanto no hebraico como no grego, e Jesus nunca fez esse voto em particular. Outros apontam para o fato de que Nazaré provém da palavra básica natzer (renovo). E muitos profetas falaram do Messias como sendo o “Renovo” (cf. Is 11:1; Jr 23:5; 33:15; Zc 3:8; 6:12).

Ainda outros observam que a cidade de Nazaré, onde Jesus viveu, era um lugar desprezado, “fora dos bons caminhos”. Isso ficou evidente na resposta de Natanael: “De Nazaré pode sair alguma coisa boa?” (Jo 1:46). Considerando isso, “Nazareno” era um termo de desprezo apropriado ao Messias, a respeito de quem os profetas haviam predito que seria "desprezado e o mais rejeitado entre os homens" (Is 53:3; cf. SI 22:6; Dn 9:26; Zc 12:10).

“He Will Be Called a Nazarene” — Did Matthew Misquote This Prophecy?

Matthew states that Jesus moved to Nazareth so that “what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: He will be called a Nazarene” (Matthew 2:23). However, no such prophecy is found in any OT prophet. Did Matthew make a mistake?

Matthew did not say that any OT “prophet” (singular) said this. He simply stated that “prophets” (plural) who lived in the OT predicted that Jesus would be called a Nazarene. So there is no reason to think that we should find a verse to that effect; we should simply consider Matthew’s statement to be a general truth that can be found in many prophets, corresponding to the characteristic type of the Nazarene. There are several suggestions as to how Jesus would have “fulfilled” (realized) this truth.

Some point to the fact that Jesus fulfilled all the requirements of righteousness in the OT Law (Matt. 5:17-18; Rom. 8:3-4), part of which involved the holy commitment made in the “Nazarite” vow. This vow was to “consecrate oneself to the Lord” (Num. 6:2), and Jesus fulfilled it perfectly. However, the word is different in both Hebrew and Greek, and Jesus never made this particular vow. Others point to the fact that Nazareth comes from the root word natzer (branch). And many prophets spoke of the Messiah as being the “Branch” (cf. Isa. 11:1; Jer. 23:5; 33:15; Zech. 3:8; 6:12). Still others note that the town of Nazareth, where Jesus lived, was a despised place, “off the beaten path.” This is evident in Nathanael’s response: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46). Considering this, “Nazarene” was a term of contempt appropriate for the Messiah, whom the prophets had predicted would be “despised and rejected by men” (Isaiah 53:3; cf. Psalm 22:6; Daniel 9:26; Zechariah 12:10).
